Tabular Hills Walk

77 km 48 miles. The final stage of this trail is a relatively easy 135 mile section from Hutton Le Hole to the lovely market town of Helmsley.

The Tabular Hills are named for their distinctive table top shapes.

The route stretches along the southern part of the North York Moors National Park and the name is derived from the land rising from south to north and is cut by a series of dales that leave tabular or table like uplands. The Tabular Hills walk is a Regional Trail an initiative of the North York Moors National Park Authority it is a bit bitty. The Tabular Hills Walk is a 79km 49 miles linear footpath connecting Scalby Mills Scarborough in North Yorkshire with Helmsley in North Yorkshire England. So armed with my Tabular Hills Walk guide purchased from the North York Moors National Park Authority I was ready to get started.

26-50 Miles The Tabular Hills are an east-west line of distinct hills on the southern boundary of the North York Moors running from Scarborough in the east all the way to Black Hambleton in the west. Starting in the market town of Helmsley with its medieval castle this walk finishes near the seaside resort town of Scarborough. The Tabular Hills In order to link the completion of the Cleveland Way at Filey and return us safely to our car near Helmsley we decided to add on the Tabular Hills walk.

This walk is a good introduction to the beauty of the valleys which run beneath the tabular hills in the Hackness area. The Tabular Hills is the name given to the hills on the southern boundary of the North York Moors and refers to their flat tabular summits seperated by steep sided valleys.

The route starts at Scalby Mills just north of Scarborough and heads west to. This North York Moors walk starts at Cockmoor Hall car park grid ref. In theory it connects the two ends of the Cleveland Way long distance walk though who would want to walk a further 50 miles to pick up their car in Helmsley having just done 110 tough moor and coast miles I cant imagine.

From the car park our walk goes out past the parish church and follows the start of the Tabular Hills Walk across the fields from Helmsley to a wooded valley called Ash Dale heading north. While the Cleveland Way follows a natural series of geological features the Tabular Hills is more a way of joining up the two ends of the National Trail.
